HMO vs. PPO Medicare Advantage Plans: What’s the Difference?

When choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, one of the most important decisions is HMO vs. PPO.
Medicare Advantage HMO Plans
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) plans typically:
- Require you to use in-network doctors
- Require referrals to see specialists
- Have lower monthly premiums and copays
These plans work well if you’re comfortable coordinating care through a primary doctor.
Medicare Advantage PPO Plans
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) plans:
- Allow you to see out-of-network providers (at higher cost)
- Do not require referrals
- Offer more flexibility
PPOs often have higher premiums but more freedom of choice.
Choosing the Right Plan
An HMO may be right if:
- Your doctors are in-network
- You want lower costs
A PPO may be better if:
- You travel frequently
- You want flexibility with providers
Provider access is one of the most important Medicare decisions. Always confirm networks before enrolling.
